Attendance Policy

School of Medicine Policies
MSP and SOM
Medicine Student Programs strives to provide a setting of excellence and strong professionalism.  Students are expected to act as the primary care provider for patients, actively participating in the care of patients by being a key member of your team during all scheduled work times.  All students should plan on attending every day during their entire clerkship/rotation.
Students are expected to actively care for patients until your duties for the day are accomplished.
If you are ill and unable to report to the hospital, contact your senior resident or attending physician by phone by 8:30 am and your Medicine Student Programs contact (Carmelita -, Liz -, or Yvonne -
Please understand that no time off is guaranteed.  Please do not make any travel arrangements prior to receiving permission.
Medicine Student Programs adheres to the absence and time off policy set by the dean's office and clerkship committees, which states that there is an allowance for two days off during your clerkship to address illnesses and unforeseen emergencies, it does not mean you get a guaranteed two days off during your rotation.
Students requesting time off for weddings, family reunions, parties, etc will not be approved for time off during regular working hours (M-F) on your clerkship.
Please schedule all professional opportunities during your 1st, 2nd and 4th years, time will not be given for conferences, admissions interviews, etc.
Holiday time off is not in line with the UW upper campus academic calendar, the first and second year medical student calendars, or the federal holiday calendar.  The recognized holidays are: Thanksgiving day, Christmas day, and New Year's day.  Holidays are not guaranteed.  Because patients never stop presenting, neither do physicians.  Your holiday time off is set strictly by your site and team.
The Clerkship Attendance Policy is applicable to all sites throughout the entire WWAMI region, including the Puget Sound Area.  Please contact your site coordinator and the Medicine Student Programs office if you have an emergency.
